Child’s Bedtime Prayer
Thank you, God, for this day,
smiles and frowns, time to play.
Thank you for my family,
all who love and care for me.
Thank you for the flowers, bees,
kitties, doggies, birdies, trees.
I believe in Jesus’ care.
Our God sees me everywhere.
Tomorrow is a brand-new day.
Help me choose kind words to say.

When I was a child, at bedtime I recited a prayer my mother taught me, before she kissed me goodnight. I think that’s a very sweet tradition. Rhyming poems, with simple words and meter, are easy for a child to remember. When I recalled that old poem recently, I thought, “Hmm. I’m not very fond of that poem now that I’m an adult.” So, I decided to write my own poem for children. I hope you like it and will consider teaching it to your children or grandchildren. If you don’t have young children in your life, perhaps share it with someone who does.
